Swine Flu A H1-N1 (10)

September 9, 2009

Dear Parents:

I would like to recommend the following in relation to the H1N1 Virus:

• If your child is diagnosed with the H1N1 Virus, they need to stay home for a minimum of seven (7) days from the time of contracting the virus, even though they may feel better; and 24 hours after having fever, without taking anti-fever medication. It is important to note that not always will the child have fever, therefore, the seven (7) day rule is very important.
• Send in your child’s school bag a small bottle of antibacterial gel and a face mask.
• Send also a bottle of water (preferably recyclable) to avoid having them us the public drinking fountains.
• Instruct your child to cover their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Recommend that they use Kleenex and in the event that this is not available to cover their nose and mouth with their elbow to avoid using their hands.
• Instruct your child to wash their hands frequently and use the anti-bacterial gel frequently.
• Recommend that they maintain a good personal distance, especially around sick people.
• Recommend that they do not share food or drinks for the time being.
• Consult with your pediatrician about applying the anti-flu vaccine in the event that the H1N1 vaccine is not available.
• Ensure that your phone numbers, street addresses and email addresses are up to date at school in the event we need to contact you.

WE CONTINUE TO RECOMMEND THAT IF YOUR CHILD PRESENTS ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS OR IS SICK, DO NOT SEND THEM TO SCHOOL AND CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY. THEY NEED TO BE ISOLATED AT HOME AND USE A FACE MASK.

ADDITIONALLY, IF ANY MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY HAS THE H1N1 VIRUS, THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS SHOULD NOT BE SENT TO SCHOOL FOR SEVEN (7) DAYS.

We remind you that the symptoms include:

• Fever (equal or higher than 38∫C, 100.4∫ F)
• Cough
• Sore Throat
• Body aches
• Headache
• Chills
• Fatigue
• Difficulty in breathing
• Pain or pressure in the chest and/or abdomen area
• The symptoms may also include vomiting and diarrhea.

If your child presents any of the following symptoms, they should have emergency treatment immediately:

• Agitated or difficulty in breathing
• Grayish or bluish coloring
• Not drinking liquids
• Not urinating frequently or no tears when crying
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• No waking up
• Resistance to touching, irritability
• Pain in the chest or stomach area
• Dizziness
