Summer School was first established at the American
School in July 1993. The school considered the idea
that the student should not be promoted to the next
grade only by taking a remedial exam, but that it was
important to provide him/her with the opportunity to
learn skills and basic knowledge that would enable his/her
success in those subjects in the future.
WHO ATTENDS SUMMER SCHOOL? –
OPTIONAL
Summer School in the National Section receives all
those students from seventh to twelfth grade who have
not complied with the academic and attendance requirements
that would allow them to pass the year. Any student
from the American School can attend this school in order
to increase their knowledge in any subject.
ADVANTAGES
Those students who attend summer school regularly,
complete assigned work, participate in class, and pass
remedial exam will be promoted to the next grade. The
remedial exam will be taken after completion of the
summer school. Each subject has been designed as a program
to help small groups of students.
Most of the summer school teachers have been chosen
from school faculty, who are familiar with the curriculum.
The students will not take exams in September. They
will pass or fail the year according to their performance
in summer school.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
At the beginning of summer school, students will receive
a syllabus with topics, papers, schedules and evaluation
criteria.
Most of the work will be done in class with the teachers
support, but they will also have homework.
Evaluation will be done according wit the following
table:
- 40% for work completion, class participation, project
presentations, reading checks, group work, tests,
etc.
- 60% remedial exam related to the summer school
curriculum.
- If the student does not get the points needed in
more than three subjects or decides not to attend
summer school, he/she will have to prepare on his/her
own for those exams over 100 points and take them
on the schedule established by the school.
