Support Program

The American School of Quito is dedicated to educating well-rounded students and is committed to their well-being. Our program extends that mission based on the principle that diversity is embraced in our school and that all students learn differently. We believe those differences enrich our entire community.

We support learning differences through a collaborative best-practice approach with a dedicated Student Support Team committed to their academic and social outcomes.

Our professionals [ELL Teachers, Intervention Teachers, Learning Support Specialists, Speech and Language Therapist, and School Psychologists] work closely with teachers, administrators and parents to ensure the students’ diverse learning needs are met. Together, we create individualized goals for each child and build a strong parent partnership to maximize learning inside and outside of the school environment.

Learning Support (LS)

The Learning Support program works with students and teachers to promote an environment where learning differences are embraced. The program offers students continuous follow-up on their academic progress and learning processes. We also work with teachers to implement accommodations students receive in class and coordinate Individualized Learning Plans. The Learning Support Specialists supply teachers with learning profiles of students in the program, act as a bridge between external support and school, and provide teachers with strategies and guidance to differentiate lessons in the classroom.

We use Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) as a framework for providing care, prevention, intervention, and enrichment for all students. Our students are able to receive targeted support through tiered interventions by various team members. These levels of support include:

Tier I: Universal interventions for all students, using core curriculum instruction with differentiation.

Tier II: Small group interventions, according to the student's needs. Includes reteaching, reinforcement and a review process to determine student process and success.

Tier III: Intensive interventions are coordinated with external support for students with specific diagnosis and individualized educational plans.

Speech and Language Therapy (SPT)

Speech and Language Therapists carry out screenings to identify students who present difficulties both in their receptive and expressive language. They are treated by the therapist within the regular schedule of classes.

The Speech and Language Therapist works collaboratively with teachers, external therapists, and parents while supplying reinforcement activities in order to develop skills needed for social and academic success.

English Language Learner (ELL) Support (International Section)

The ELL teacher in the International Section works within the multi-tiered system to support students with specific English Language Learning (ELL) needs. Accommodations may be provided to reinforce any of the 4 components of the language (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). Collaboration with classroom teachers are regularly implemented in order to provide accommodations to ensure appropriate scaffolding for student learning. These changes are made to provide students with equal access to learning. Accommodations and scaffolding are just different approaches to achieving the same curricular success.
